Rudy's is a country store that happens to serve barbecue, or a barbecue joint that happens to sell everything else — the distinction hardly matters.
Mack "Doc" Holiday started this outfit in 1989, and it's been wood-fired oak and no apologies since. The Austin location sits on Ranch Road 620 north of the city, part of a small chain that treats barbecue and general store goods with equal seriousness — which is to say, complete seriousness. Order at the counter, eat at a table, and understand that you're in a place built on doing one thing well and refusing to pretend it's anything grander than that.
