Big Bob Gibson Bar-B-Q — Decatur
The Atlas Review
The BBQ Atlas
Big Bob Gibson's 6th Avenue outpost in Decatur: hickory smoke, white sauce, and a drive-thru that runs until half-eight.
Big Bob Gibson has been a Decatur institution since 1925, and it's the birthplace of Alabama white sauce — chickens still get dunked in the tangy, mayo-based original that spawned a whole category. Four generations of the Gibson-McLemore-Lilly family have kept the hickory pits going, and pitmaster Chris Lilly has carried its championship barbecue onto the national stage. Order the pulled pork shoulder or the white-sauce chicken, and save room for pie.
